چکیده

Temporary or preparatory prostheses for use by lower-extremity amputees have been mentioned frequently and used occasionally for many years (1, 2, 3, 4, 5), but they have not been adopted readily in the United States. Many reasons have been given why preliminary fitting has not been done and these have included: 1. stump damage because of malfitting plaster or other temporary socket, 2. rapid shrinkage resulting in discomfort and stump damage because of change in contour of the stump, 3. development of persistent undesirable gait habits because of the absence of a knee joint, 4. a satisfactory preparatory prosthesis is almost as expensive as a finished limb, 5. it is cosmetically an inadequate device, 6. prosthetists do not have the time or desire to learn to use this mechanism, 7. if the principle of preparatory prostheses were good, it would be accepted readily and this has not been the case (6) . Preparatory lower-extremity prostheses have been used in the Orthopaedic Amputee Clinic at Duke University Medical Center since 1955 (7) and the Durham Veterans Administration Hospital since 1957. Originally, these were plaster sockets with wooden crutch extensions and were used primarily to assist with stump shrinkage in the aboveknee amputee and early ambulation of this same group for physical and psychological reasons. These primary uses were then supplemented by an additional activity directed toward assessing an increasing number of geriatric amputees with vascular disease whose potential for successful use of a prosthesis was doubtful and whose limited public and

Temporary prosthetic fitting for below-knee amputation.

The problems encountered in fitting and using the permanent below-knee prosthesis in developing countries are the high price of the prosthesis, inadequate fitting and lack of proper rehabilitation. In Turkey, the preferred treatment of the stump post-operatively is by the soft dressing method with bandaging for maturation and shrinkage. Generally, the application of the permanent prosthesis is ...

A comparison of the SACH and single axis foot in the gait of unilateral below-knee amputees.

The gait patterns of unilateral below-knee amputees wearing prostheses with either a SACH foot or a single axis foot were compared. A temporary below-knee prosthesis was fabricated for each subject using plaster of Paris and Plastazote for the socket, a pylon and an artificial foot. Eight subjects were filmed at two separate sessions, one in which the SACH foot was worn on their prosthesis and ...

Prosthetic programme after above-knee amputation in children with sarcomata.

A programme for early mobilisation using a temporary prosthesis was evaluated in 17 children who had had an amputation above the knee for sarcomata. The temporary prosthesis had a performed adjustable polypropylene quadrilateral socket which was able to accommodate changes in the size of the stump during the first few months after amputation. The adjustable sockets were assembled onto wooden kn...

Dynamics of a Running Below-Knee Prosthesis Compared to Those of a Normal Subject

The normal human running has been simulated by two-dimensional biped model with 7 segments. Series of normal running experiments were performed and data of ground reaction forces measured by force plate was analyzed and was fitted to some Fourier series. The model is capable to simulate running for different ages and weights at different running speeds. A proportional derivative control algorit...
